Teen ambassadors' ties to Junior Livestock Show of Spokane 'run deep'

Capital Press - 8/11/25

The ambassadors to the Junior Livestock Show of Spokane are spending their summer putting up dryland and irrigated alfalfa and showing at county fairs and volunteering at an animal shelter. Maeve Korthuis, a student at Lind-Ritzville High School, and Stella Nelson, of Stanwood High School, were named ambassadors during the show in May. “My commitment to the Junior Livestock Show of Spokane runs deep,” Korthuis said. “I sold my first ever market steer, Rocket, at Junior Show when I was 9 years old. On haul-in day, I was unsure of why I was there and why I was going to sell my beloved steer. There were some tears on Sunday, but I left with a new understanding of how I could make a place for myself within the agricultural industry.”  MORE

From the Archives

In the early days of Junior Show, the wooden cane was a symbol of participation. Exhibitors, judges and parents all sported the accessory. This young showman from one of the first shows juggles his champion Hereford, his cane and the long lead rope. Show sticks and show halters would come later.
